Chrysler has a long and storied history with the Hemi engine, dating back to 1951. The first-generation Hemi was made until 1958 and was the foundational design for most of Chrysler’s V-8 engine packages. It was phased out for the more-affordable Wedge designs until 1964, when the second-generation 426-ci Hemi arrived. This version was designed to exclusively be Chrysler’s flagship performance engine and was successful in potent muscle car and racing applications. However, it was discontinued after the muscle car era.
A third-generation Hemi was released in 2003 to considerable fanfare. During that time, there was a famous advertising campaign with actors who asked, “That thing got a Hemi?” This design has lasted more than 20 years and featured various displacements and performance levels, including the legendary Hellcat, which produced between 707 and 807 hp on regular fuel. An E85 version in the Demon 170 boasted more than 1,000 hp.
If you don’t own a Hellcat but you want the Hellcat’s level of performance, this book is for you. In New Hemi Engines: How to Supercharge and Turbocharge, author Douglas Glad guides you through the process of installing a power adder on a new Hemi engine. The basics of supercharger and turbocharger technology and design are covered along with installation considerations, prepping your engine for the newfound boost, tuning, an examination of the aftermarket options, and the gear that is required. There is even information about beefing up your drivetrain to handle all of that newfound power. r
If you want to build your naturally aspirated Hemi engine into a Hellcat-level performer, or simply want to learn how it is done, this book is a must-have addition to your Mopar library.
